In 2022, I was invited by Director Fede Alvarez and PD Naaman Marshall during pre-production to produce conceptual designs for Alien: Romulus.

As we enter the third act of the film, I wanted to create a simple bold shape, that would dramatically lean over the protagonists to create a feeling of weight and discomfort. The taper and height of the ceiling would also aim to give the impression that we are far into the depths of the space station. The raw, industrial nature of the space is a nod to Aliens (1986) and also a design intention to make the space feel utilitarian, as it is a ‘service zone’ carrying frozen facehuggers into the Romulus lab for scientific purposes.

This was the first version I worked up of the Hive and Conveyor hall, where the slant of the hallway went in the opposite direction to the final approved design. This version also explored the idea of the planet below emitting bright orange light that would project up through some low level windows of this corridor - producing a glow and highlighting the translucency of the hive material. I also played with the idea of the wall lights being partially and fully submerged in the hive so they would give the same effect.
